A major shoutout goes to the fine publication, Life In The Time, for publishing Beaches of Santa Cruz. This is one of many poems I’ve written about the homeless in California; those friends and neighbors who are abandoned, living on the margins of society. I am fascinated by their ability to survive.
The Art of Helping (And opening up to its joy) was originally published in the Age of Empathy. The poem is based on my two years of helping a disabled woman with her daily life chores. It was a difficult and low-paying job but highly rewarding. She was one of my more memorable teachers as I was making my transition from therapist to writer.
